The German Startup Ecosystem

The top 10 German cities with the best startup ecosystem

(as per the Startup Blink ranking of more than 125 countries and 950 cities)

City name, global rank, total score (as per September 16, 2018):

  1. Berlin: 5, 24.17
  2. Munich: 64, 10.09
  3. Hamburg: 74, 9.87
  4. Frankfurt: 84, 9.69
  5. Cologne: 107, 9.48
  6. Stuttgart: 181, 8.47
  7. Duesseldorf: 228, 6.24
  8. Dresden: 243, 5.73
  9. Karlsruhe: 248, 5.72
  10. Leipzig: 252, 5.71

One special characteristic of the German ecosystem is that it is spread across the country and not just centered in the main capital (like in the case of London or Paris). As a result except for Berlin no city is ranked in the top globally, however as a distributed network it is strong. Key is to find the right specialized local ecosystem, e.g. Berlin for B2C, Frankfurt for Fintech, Cologne for Media, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe for Industry 4.0, Hamburg for logistics etc.

For comparison top 10 globally:

  1. San Francisco: 1, 322.60
  2. New York: 2, 122.25
  3. London: 3, 41.69
  4. Los Angeles: 4, 30.96
  5. Berlin: 5, 24.17
  6. Boston: 6, 21.95
  7. Tel Aviv: 7, 21.77
  8. Chicago: 8, 19.40
  9. Seattle: 9, 18.31
  10. Paris: 10, 18,20
